10,000 characters later - Threads now has enough space to overshare

Say goodbye to spamming your followers with multi-part posts

Finally, you can fit your rants in the character limit. Threads has been quietly rolling out a brand new function, the long-form text attachment. You can bold, italicise... and even strikethrough if you want to theatrically cross out your mistakes.

Remember the days when you had to cram a life-changing thought into a soul destroying character count? Me too, given those days were in the last few weeks! But worry not, fellow writer, threads have given us another option. Enter: the 10,000 character text attachment. For creators, this is a chance to connect with your audience in a different way. It's a chance to be more human, more detailed, more informative, and even... more dramatic.

This isn't a small change, especially for those among us that write to create content, news, and stories. Now, our words have room to stretch out. We can leave in that phrase we thought we needed but were forced to abandon before. You don't even need to be a writer for this to make a huge difference in your threads - whether you want to share your thoughts on your latest book, a review of a favorite film, or speak about important subjects, this update allows you to do exactly that.

The only thing I would advise against, is using this feature after a few too many glasses of wine. No-one needs to read your 10,000 character love letter to your ex and trust me, sober you will thank me for giving you this advice.

For those worried about this function overwhelming the feed and clogging up your algorithm, it won't. Threads keeps the scrollable bite sized feed, just now with an option to dive deeper if you want to.

To use it, simply tap the new icon in the composer that looks like a rounded rectangle with lines, and voila, a miniature word processor will appear. Once you're ready, hit post as usual and your thread is available, with your added words hidden under the posh new 'read more' block. This feature will especially tease your followers, ensuring they click, engage, and enjoy your content.

This feature is available to all users, and is part of Meta's broader strategy to attract and retain creators on the platform. It offers a seamless way to share long-form content, enhancing the user experience. Don't worry too much if you can't see or use this feature just yet - It was released in early September but is being rolled out to all users gradually.

Threads continues to quietly prove that the best social media apps don't give you a new face, or a catchy song, it just simply - gives you a voice.
